Behavioural Counselling

Addressing your cat or dog’s behaviours with expert guidance.

Our Fear-Free Certified veterinarians can help you address many common behavioural concerns, including pointing you towards good resources for training, socialization and behaviour modification. Additionally, many behaviour concerns may have a root medical issue that we can help you diagnose and address. For severe behavioural issues or for pets that require more intensive support, we can also refer a board-certified veterinary behaviourist.

How can behavioural counseling help my dog/cat’s behaviour?

Our expertise will allow us to properly identify the causes of your pet’s problematic behaviours and create a treatment plan that is tailored specifically for your unique situation. By seeking help early on, we can quickly correct their behaviour and prevent any sort of escalation. Some unusual actions are also tied to underlying medical conditions, so it is important to seek guidance early on to prevent a worsening of conditions.

What happens at the initial pet counseling meeting?

The first consultation typically involves a one-on-one conversation with one of our trainers where you will explain the unusual behaviours that your pet is displaying. Then, the trainer will provide you with a detailed action plan containing various techniques that you can apply to address your concerns.

Will my pet insurance policy cover the cost of dog or cat behaviour counseling?

Insurance policies differ significantly from each other. We recommend that you contact your insurance provider to learn more about your coverage as it relates to pet behavioural counselling.

What can I expect after the consultation?

After the first meeting, you will come out with a better understanding of the causes of your pet’s problematic behaviours and you will be equipped with the tools you need to address them. Behaviour counselling and therapy is a long-term process, so you will be working in collaboration with our team for an extended period of time. Feel free to reach out to us if you have any further questions or concerns. We also recommend that you schedule regular consultations so that we can monitor your progress and modify strategies if needed.

Do you offer puppy socialization classes?

Socialization is a critical time frame in a canine’s life. It begins at 3 weeks and fades away by 12 weeks. The period between 6 to 8 months is also very important. It is best to introduce them to as many new people and situations as possible at that time. This ensures a healthy attachment to people and other animals. Although we do not offer puppy socialization classes here at the clinic we will provide you with a handout in your puppy package on how to choose a trainer that is right for you and your puppy. We can also provide you the names of 2 training facilities that we highly recommend.
